'Night Of Camp David': Paul Greengrass To Direct A New Film About A US President Descending Into Madness

When you think of filmmakers that have made some of the best political, news-driven thrillers of the past decade, you can’t help but mention Paul Greengrass. The man hasn’t met a political thriller that he hasn’t wanted to turn into a feature film. And surprise, surprise, he’s doing it again, with his upcoming film, “Night of Camp David.” But unlike “Captain Phillips,” “United 93,” and “22 July,” this new film is based on a fictional story that just so happens to mirror a reality that Americans were living over the past four years.

According to THR, Paul Greengrass has come aboard the new film, “Night of Camp David.” The film, which is based on the 1965 novel by author Fletcher Knebel, tells the story of a junior US Senator that begins to believe that the current President of the United States might be losing his mind and falling victim to paranoia. Sound familiar? Well, how about the fact that the decades-old book also talked about how the fictional President began to grow closer to the Soviet Union and started to believe the media was out to get him? Definitely doesn’t sound like a recent political figure that was ousted and replaced by a man that falls up the stairs. “Night of Camp David” is adapted by writer Jed Mercurio, who is probably best known for his work on the recent hit British thriller series, “Bodyguard.”

As mentioned, Greengrass has seemingly become the go-to guy to adapt films that are based on real-world events or eerily relevant to current news items. So, the fact he is will helm this new film is hardly a shock. His most recent feature is the four-time Oscar-nominated feature, “News of the World,” which stars frequent collaborator Tom Hanks. And now that we mention it, how good would Tom Hanks be as a President that slowly loses his mind? Let’s make this happen!

No release date has been announced for “Night of Camp David,” but we can assume this might be next on Greengrass’ slate. We’ll just have to wait and see.
