Paul Greengrass’ ‘The Uprising’ Starring Andrew Garfield, Is Suddenly A Robin Hood Origin Film

Well, it looks like the new Paul Greengrass and Andrew Garfield film “The Uprising” isn’t just about a farmer leading a mass revolt/rebellion against the British crown, as it’s now been officially revealed by Focus Features/Universal Pictures to be a Robin Hood origin film, and the events of the movie help to inspire the bandit’s legend.

The film’s official social media account posted a new teaser with the tagline “Witness the Rise of Robin Hood” and footage of Garfield as a masked bandit robbing folks on the road with a bow and arrow.

Here is the film’s updated synopsis via Focus that doubles down on the Robin Hood connection:

Andrew Garfield stars as the leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. Set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood, he forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.

Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, Katherine Waterston, Sky Yang, and more are among the film’s supporting cast. Also written by Greengrass, who produces alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, and Lars Sylvest.

Kind of wild that this detail is being announced only a few weeks ahead of the movie’s release on September 10, and it gives us a little bit of a shock that the studio would attempt to hide this for so long. Unless they were worried that, with Hugh Jackman‘s “The Death of Robin Hood” coming out in the same year, they really needed to give their project some serious distance from the A24 pic.

Focus’ parent company, Universal, had once attempted to launch a “Robin Hood” franchise-starter back in 2010 with the Ridley Scott film starring Russell Crowe, Oscar Isaac, Mark Strong, and Cate Blanchett, infusing historical elements as well, including the never-ending war between the English and French armies (however, that public domain flick ended up one-and-done).
