Writing about movies just isn’t the same without something to talk about from Pedro Almodovar, it’s been a while since we’ve heard from the filmmaker. Two years ago he dropped the campy comedy "I’m So Excited" to a mostly polite but unenthusiastic reception, but it looks like he’s getting ready to return behind the camera, with what sounds like, at least from the barest threads of information, a return to the familiar themes and archetypes of his best work.
"It’s a return to the cinema of women, of great female protagonists, and it’s a hard-hitting drama, which excites me," he told the Financial Times, of the project titled "Silencio."
"It’s called ‘Silencio’ because that’s the principal element that drives the worst things that happen to the main female protagonist," the filmmaker teasingly added.
No word yet on cast, or when it might shoot, but a new drama from Almodovar? Yes, please. His genre diversions of late have been satisfying, but this sounds similar to the foundation upon which some of his best works are built. [via THR]
