Phil Lord & Chris Miller Say They Were Offered A Live-Action ‘Spider-Man’ Film, But Are Busy Overseeing ‘Spider-Verse’

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmaking duo behind “Project Hail Mary,” have become synonymous with the world of “Spider-Man” thanks to their trilogy of “Spider-Verse” animated films (the first film earning a Best Animated Feature Film Oscar statue) and more recently had developed/executive producing the upcoming Nicolas Cage-led series “Spider-Noir” (focused on a variant iteration of Spidey and Cage reprising his “Into The Spider-Verse” role).

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on his popular podcast, “Happy Sad Confused,” the directors confirmed that they were indeed pursued for live-action “Spider-Man,” but they sadly stopped short of giving any concrete details about that offer, despite being pressed.

“Yes,” Miller said and chuckled when directly asked about being offered a live-action “Spider-Man” movie. Horowitz tried to find out if this was a mainline pic or one of the spinoffs. Miller responded coyly with, “As you know, we love Spider-Man, we’re fans of the character and the world. We’ll leave it at that.”

When Horowitz asked the directing duo about their desire to attempt a live-action Spider-Man film in the future, “We have a whole Spider-Verse to finish, we’re halfway through this thing,” Miller said. With Lord adding, “I would say, I would long to have the headspace available to think of another one of those darn things.”

We have to assume this might have been part of the transitional period at Sony Pictures, as the studio scrapped Sam Raimi‘s “Spider-Man 4” to jump into the plans for a rebooted trilogy that would eventually star Andrew Garfield, but when “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” wasn’t exactly a critical hit Sony/producers pivoted to a second reboot with Tom Holland being cast for “Captain America: Civil War” as Marvel Studios would end up collaborating on the next string of solo films with Sony.

Funny enough, “Project Hail Mary” screenwriter Drew Goddard (“Matrix 5”) was once tasked to helm “The Sinister Six” movie and had recently confirmed in an interview with Reel Rejects that Garfield’s Spidey was going to be part of the nixed villain-focused film. Also, he’s still itching to make a non-serialized comic book movie (he would nearly showrun the “Daredevil” series at Netflix and was developing an “X-Force” film for Fox that was expected to be a follow-up to “Deadpool 2” before the merger killed it).

Sony head Tom Rothman had recently revealed the studio’s plan to reboot the Sonyverse, and we’re curious if they’ll be smart enough to get Lord/Miller involved alongside Marvel Studios after a bunch of their MCU-adjacent films had struggled to find an audience without Spider-Man’s involvement in their splinter cinematic universe. That said, Lord/Miller are still working on “Spider-Verse” spinoffs, including one with Daniel Kaluuya‘s Spider-Punk.
