Daniel Kaluuya & Ajon Singh Writing ‘Spider-Punk’ Spinoff Animated Movie As The ‘Spider-Verse’ Looks To Expand

While Spidey fans have things like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse” to look forward to in the not-too-distant future, another feature film has been announced, as British actor Daniel Kaluuya is set to return to the role of Hobie Brown in a new “Spider-Punk” spinoff animated film at Sony Pictures Animation.

The news hails from Deadline, who mention that Kaluuya, who has been keeping a low profile since the release of Jordan Peele‘s “Nope” and his Best Supporting Actor win for “Judas & The Black Messiah,” is set to co-write the animated spinoff alongside Ajon Sighn, who recently wrote A24‘s “Primetime” starring Robert Pattinson.

Hobie is very much a stylish and cool take on the Spider-Man character, which is quite an extreme opposite of the brainy bookworm iterations we’ve seen with various takes on Peter Parker. Even Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy have their moments of coolness, but still have the nerd/outsider angle infused within their characters.

Residing on Earth-138, a cool aspect is that we didn’t really get a huge exploration of Hobie’s universe, which could be a lot more dystopian or in need of heroics than we’ve seen with Miles and Gwen’s universes.

One of the best aspects of the “Spider-Verse” is being able to explore different settings, and seeing a punk/anarchist variant of Spidey isn’t the only draw, as animation allows for all kinds of stories to be told with these characters. The sky’s the limit.

This wouldn’t exactly be the first “Spider-Verse” spinoff project as Nicolas Cage is reprising his “Spider-Man Noir” character for an upcoming live-action Prime Video series, and there had been multiple reports of a Hailee Steinfeld‘s Gwen getting female-centric film project in the works as well. The latter really hasn’t seen many updates in the last couple of years, and we have to presume it’s in limbo for the moment.

What this means for a live-action version of “Spider-Punk” remains to be seen, as we’ve seen Donald Glover as The Powler in “Across The Spider-Verse,” harkening back to his cameo in “Homecoming” as Miles’ uncle, and Cage is now playing a live-action version of his “Spider-Verse” variant in the aforementioned Prime Video show.

The next live-action project for Kaluuya is a new Chris Rock-directed film at A24 that co-stars Rosalind Eleazar, Adam Driver, and Anna Kendrick.

Last month, it was revealed that Sony had pushed the release of “Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse,” the third film in a trilogy, to June 25, 2027.
