After the shake-up with both leadership positions at both Disney and Lucasfilm, there are now some optimistic signs that actor John Boyega might be closer to coming back to the “Star Wars” universe after teasing discussions about the future of Finn at a recent convention panel.
During a chat at MEGACON in Orlando (via ScreenRant), Boyega made it clear he’s spoken with Lucasfilm’s Dave Filoni about Finn and “Star Wars.” Still, the British actor stopped short of explaining exactly what those conversations were about and if he’ll ultimately make a return to the franchise (Boyega has been warming up to the idea as of late).

An enthusiastic fan is said to have shouted to Boyega at the event, “Get Dave [Filoni] on the phone.” After that, Boyega’s response was, “I actually have, actually.” Alluding to a new/old conversation with the newly minted President and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm (Filoni taking over studio reigns from an exiting Kathleen Kennedy).
We’re reminded that Boyega didn’t have the greatest reception when it was revealed he would be one of the main protagonists in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and faced a heap of racist backlash for simply wearing a Stormtrooper uniform (something explained in the film). Oddly enough, his character Finn would be seemingly downgraded in the two follow-up sequels rather than being a co-lead alongside Daisy Ridley‘s Rey Skywalker, and those teases of Finn developing his force powers were tempered down.
There had been some speculation that Ridley’s “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” (has director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached) could leave room for returning characters like Finn. However, it’s unclear if that sequel will see the light of day with projects like “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and “Star Wars: Starfighter” jumping ahead into production as
New Jedi Order” seemingly lingers in development limbo.
We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed to see what happens with the fate of Finn in this new era of Lucasfilm and Disney, being now overseen by new CEO Josh D’Amaro; there could be open-mindedness to have Boyega return to the fold.
