‘Planet Of The Dead’: Zack Snyder Reveals ‘Army Of The Dead’ Sequel Title & Hints At A Surprising Return

This has been a big year for Zack Snyder. Not only did he finally get to release his years-in-the-making “Synder Cut” of “Justice League,” but he also got to kickstart his “Army of the Dead” franchise on Netflix, not just with the first film but also the first spinoff, “Army of Thieves.” But this is only the tip of the ‘Dead’ iceberg, as the filmmaker is already teasing what should be coming in the first sequel, “Planet of the Dead.”

For those that haven’t seen “Army of the Dead,” the film tells the story of a zombie outbreak that is seemingly kept under confinement in what is left of Las Vegas. The film followed a group of people picked to break into a casino deep in the zombie-infested lands and steal a huge sum of cash. Some of the characters died, some lived, and some, well, it’s unclear what happened.

And in a recent interview with Inverse, Snyder teased that one of the fan-favorite characters, Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer), who also is the star of ‘Thieves,’ might be coming back for the sequel film even though his character’s fate was seemingly sealed at the end of “Army of the Dead.”

“But the real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left,” teased Snyder. “I won’t tell you what happens in ‘Army of the Dead 2’ — aka ‘Planet of the Dead’ — but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”

The other character mentioned in that statement is Gwendoline, who fans will meet in the forthcoming “Army of Thieves,” played by “Game of Thrones” alum, Nathalie Emmanuel

So, as it is abundantly clear, Snyder is full steam ahead on his ‘Dead’ franchise, with its spinoffs and sequels. A release date for “Planet of the Dead” has yet to be announced, but “Army of Thieves” will arrive on Netflix on October 29.
