'Ratched' Trailer: Sarah Paulson Stars As The Infamous 'Cuckoo's Nest' Nurse In Ryan Murphy's Netflix Series

Nurse Ratched is one of the most iconic characters in film history. Or at least, that’s what Ryan Murphy says in the new trailer for his upcoming Netflix thriller series, “Ratched.” And for many, this might be true, as the character is an imposing figure in the classic film “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” But in the upcoming prequel series, starring Sarah Paulson, about the evil character’s origins, Murphy is putting his very unique stamp on the wretched Ratched.

Ryan Murphy is the man behind various major TV series including “Glee,” “Hollywood,” “The Politician,” and “American Horror Story.” And it seems as if he’s borrowing from just about all of those shows for “Ratched.” The trailer for the new Netflix series showcases the glitz and glamour of the period costumes and color of “Hollywood” with the dark humor of “The Politician” and the clear horror elements of ‘AHS.’ Okay, maybe there’s no “Glee” connection, but I wouldn’t put it past Murphy to have one character break out into song as they lobotomize a patient.

“Ratched” is expected to arrive on Netflix on September 18.

Here’s the synopsis:

From Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, RATCHED is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched. In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.
