Lucasfilm & Disney Release ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Early On Digital

Over the past few days, daily life has changed dramatically for many, many people. Among the downsides of “social distance” is that people can’t be running to theaters and watch “Onward” and “Bloodshot” over and over, meaning that everyone is looking for something new to watch from the comfort of the homes they aren’ allowed to leave. After giving parents a breather by releasing “Frozen 2” on Disney Plus last night, Disney and Lucasfilm have seemingly released “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” early on digital, all so you can fight with your friends about whether it’s the best movie since the ‘80s or it ruined your childhood.

The film was scheduled to come out on March 17th on video-on-demand services, but last night fans started taking to Twitter to comment on the availability of the movie. As of the writing of this article, the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga is available on most digital platforms like Vudu, iTunes, Google Play and Amazon, days before its scheduled launch date. It seems like you can’t rent the film until March 31st, but if you want to own a digital copy of the film, then this will be a treat for fans. The digital release also comes with bonus content, from deleted scenes and features to the feature-length documentary “The Skywalker Legacy.”

Though it didn’t come with as much fanfare as the release of “Frozen 2” as it was just a matter of days instead of months, this is an interesting move by Disney as the ninth episode of the “Star Wars” saga was considered to have underperformed, and got a worse critical reception than previous films in the Disney Era, giving those who want to relieve the movie, want to see it for the first time, or simply argue about its merits and flaws online a chance to do so early and without much competition. With many people expected to stay home for the next few days, it is only a matter of time before we hear news about “New Mutants” being dropped on a streaming service, right? A man can dream.
