Robert Pattinson Says ‘Tenet’ Is A “Magic Trick” That “Completely Morphs” Into Different Genres

It has been well documented that not even the actors involved with “Tenet” really know what to make of Christopher Nolan’s new film. Kenneth Branagh equated the film’s script to a crossword puzzle. And now, we have Robert Pattinson saying the film is a type of “magic trick.”

Speaking to EW, the actor tried his best to explain what people can expect from “Tenet.” And as we have seen from the trailers and the interviews with the cast and filmmaker, this is not a film that is easy to categorize.

“You really think it’s going to be a particular type of genre,” explained Pattinson. “Then it expands into something else and you’re like, ‘Oh, okay, this is kind of where we’re at.’ Then it just completely morphs into an entirely different genre, which is very, very unexpected. My first impression was it seems like the greatest plate-spinning trick you’ve ever seen. It’s putting another plate spinning and another and another and another to the point where it gets really impressive and then it just sort of gets frightening.”

He continued, “It becomes a magic trick, this feat of engineering, the script. When I first read it, I was just kind of amazed by the ingenuity of the writing. Then, just to think, like, how the fuck are they going to make this into an actual movie? Just the basic premise of certain scenes are so complicated to even understand in your mind, the idea of actually shooting them seemed totally impossible. Luckily, I didn’t have to plan it at all. I just had to turn up.”

We have been talking about “Tenet” for well over a year at this point. And when we first saw the film’s announcement, it was described as an action epic from Christopher Nolan. Then it seemed to be some sort of spy film. But not even the trailers have really done much to further explain what fans will expect when they sit down (masks on) in theaters on July 31. But needless to say, there will be action and plenty of weird backwards time stuff. Oh yeah, and something about the word “tenet.”

But honestly, at this point, trying to pick apart what “Tenet” is really about is a futile gesture. We’ll all best be served by waiting for the film itself.
