'The Book Of Boba Fett': Robert Rodriguez Joins Favreau & Filoni As Exec Producers & Disney Confirms Mando S3 Still Coming

Following the blow-up-the-Internet finale of “The Mandalorian” on Friday, creator, writer, director, and showrunner Jon Favreau, did the beginning of his victory lap on Good Morning America. And he answered some of the questions many had about the finale (which we’ll try not to spoil here and won’t mention, you know who).

For one, in the post-credits of the show, the series revealed a spin-off arriving December 21, 2021, called ‘The Book of Boba Fett,” a series centering on the return of the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter who already played a major role in the last few episodes of ‘The Mandalorian.”

But what of that show itself? The ending of the season two finale felt like it had an ending; Mando’s (Pedro Pascal) seemed done. Many audiences were asking if the show was over, and Favreau and co-exec producer Dave Filoni were moving onto ‘Boba’ and leaving Mando behind or not (they also have two more shows in development; “Ranger of the Republic” and “Ahsoka“). Well, that’s not true.

Today, on GMA, Favreau unveiled “The Book Of Boba Fett” logo, the December 2021 release date, and confirmed “The Mandalorian” season three is still going ahead and will shoot in a few months (see the video below). Favreau said Lucasfilm allowed him to keep ‘Boba Fett’ a secret from the Disney Investors Day, and production on ‘Mando’ season three begins immediately after “Boba Fett” is complete. “That’s going to be pretty soon, following ‘Boba Fett,’ and we are in pre-production now.”

Additionally, after the GMA appearance. Lucasfilm sent a press release and revealed that Robert Rodriguez would be an exec producer on the show. This is interesting for several reasons, most of all because Rodriguez was not meant to be part of the ‘Mandalorian.’ He arrived as a last-minute replacement director on season two and was able to helm the episode that re-introduced Boba Fett to the “Star Wars” galaxy. Fans raved about his episode and the direction, and one wonders if Favreau and Filoni were also so impressed, they decided to add him as a creative voice on the show.

Surely, this means he will direct on the show and possibly write as well. Temuera Morrison returns, obviously as the titular bounty hunter, along with Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand (who it was recently revealed will be appearing on the animated, “Star Wars: The Bad Batch“). Here’s the full Lucasfilm press release. The Logo and full GMA interviews below.

Boba Fett is back. And his story is just beginning.

As teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the season finale of The Mandalorian, the legendary bounty hunter’s journey will continue in The Book of Boba Fett. Jon Favreau, the executive producer of The Mandalorian, confirmed today on Good Morning America that the new series is currently in production and will arrive December 2021, only on Disney+.

The Book of Boba Fett will be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian and star Temuera Morrison as the titular bounty hunter, along with Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. Robert Rodriguez — who directed Chapter 14 of The Mandalorian, a thrilling installment that reintroduced Boba Fett to the Star Wars galaxy — joins Favreau and Dave Filoni as executive producer.

Boba Fett made his big-screen debut in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, becoming an instant fan favorite thanks to his visually arresting armor and cool demeanor. Jeremy Bulloch, the original actor inside the armor, passed away last week — but his legacy, including all he brought to Boba Fett, goes on. The Book of Boba Fett will carry that legacy forward.
