Robert Zemeckis Says 'Back To The Future' Sequels "Can't Be Done" & Says Disney Isn't Interested In 'Roger Rabbit' Sequel

Sadly, 2018 was not the year that Robert Zemeckis cemented his place as one of the best filmmakers working today. Despite being responsible for some of the best films of all time, the acclaimed director released one of the worst films (and biggest box office bombs) of the year, “Welcome to Marwen.” That being said, the filmmaker would be welcomed back by fans with open arms if he were to tackle two of his classic film franchises, “Back to the Future” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

In a new interview with Yahoo, Zemeckis was asked a variety questions related to ‘Marwen,’ but the interview really gets interesting when he’s asked about a recent poll ranking “Back to the Future” as the franchise that fans most want to see return to the big screen.

For those not aware, the reason that ‘BttF’ has not be sequelized even more or possibly rebooted is that Zemeckis, along with Bob Gale, has a deal that says nothing can happen without their approval, and those two have long said that no more “Back to the Future” films would be happening as long as they live. So, when the poll came out, people wondered if Zemeckis’ thoughts on the idea of a sequel have changed. Spoiler alert – they haven’t.

“[The poll] confirms what we all know, but what I think the fans are really saying is that we really like this movie and if it were possible I’d like more of it. But they understand that it can’t be done,” said Zemeckis.

“Can’t be done” is a far cry from “won’t be done,” but the end result is still the same – no more “Back to the Future.” But that doesn’t mean Zemeckis is against returning to another one of his more beloved film universes – “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”

In fact, not only is he willing to do it, there’s a script collecting dust over at Disney, but he doesn’t feel like it’ll ever get done with the current status of the Mouse House.

“I don’t think so. I don’t know where [‘Roger Rabbit’] fits in in their universe. There’s no princess in it, so I don’t know where that would be,” said the filmmaker. “There’s a wonderful script sitting at Disney that is really good, but I don’t think it’s on their radar.”

So, it appears that if you want to experience new Zemeckis content, you’re stuck with ‘Marwen’ and his recent fascination for turning great documentaries into self-indulgent, CGI-filled adaptations. But hey, if that’s your thing, then go for it.
