'S.W.A.T.' Is Getting A Fresh TV Reboot

Just when you thought that CBS might be full of law-enforcement procedurals, they go and sign Justin Lin and Shawn Ryan to bring a rebooted “S.W.A.T.” to TV. Of course, it’s easy to be dismissive of yet another reboot coming to the TV dial, but the addition of Lin and Ryan is enough to warrant another look.

The original 1970s “S.W.A.T.” aired for two seasons and told the story of an elite SWAT unit in California. It was most recently rebooted in 2003 as a movie starring Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Farrell, and directed by Clark Johnson. But that wasn’t so well received, so it kind of figures the property is being retooled again. This new version on CBS will tell the story of an African-American SWAT lieutenant who has to balance being a good cop and growing up in a tough neighborhood.

Justin Lin is coming off directing the recent “Star Trek Beyond,” which garnered good reviews from fans and critics alike, as well as his hugely successful run on the “Fast & Furious” franchise. Shawn Ryan is a TV veteran, perhaps best known for series “The Shield,” which he created for FX. So perhaps this will have something worth tuning for? It certainly can’t be worse than that “Lethal Weapon” series, right? [via AV Club]
