The struggle faced by military families is well-known. When a loved one chooses life in the armed forces, that choice normally entails frequent, and long, deployments overseas. While many civilians only know about those incredibly emotional reunions caught on video, as a husband and wife embrace after months apart, with the little child holding up a hand-made sign, there’s a lot more to the story. And that’s exactly what writer-director Megan Griffiths’ emotionally-charged “Sadie” presents audiences.
We are honored to share the exclusive look at the latest trailer for the SXSW standout, which shows the toll that a military family feels when a father is away from his wife and daughter. “Sadie” follows the titular young teen that worships her father, praising his duty to our country while also glorifying the violence he partakes in while on deployment. The young Sadie takes over the role as protector of her small family, which includes her mom (played by Melanie Lynskey), and adopts a demeanor that begins to worry people close to her.
“Sadie” received rave reviews coming out of this year’s SXSW. In our review, we said, “…as a character study of a young, simmering, resentful girl cheated by circumstance and life at a crucial age, the drama’s combative, aggrieved center is earned, authentic and genuinely tragic.”

As mentioned above, the cast includes Lynskey, but the real standout is Sophia Mitri Schloss. As seen in the new trailer, Schloss’ performance is incredible and is one of the best performances by a young person you’re likely to see all year. Joining Schloss and Lynskey in the cast are John Gallagher Jr., Tony Hale, Keith L. Williams, and Danielle Brooks.
“Sadie” hits select theaters on October 12.

Sadie is the powerful, unsettling and darkly funny story of a young girl (Sophia Mitri Schloss) who will stop at nothing to preserve her father’s place on the home front. Sadie is the daughter of a soldier and she models herself after his military example. When her mom, Rae (Melanie Lynskey), begins dating a new man, Cyrus (John Gallagher Jr.), Sadie vows to come between them, whatever it takes. Cyrus becomes the enemy, and if she’s learned anything from the world she inhabits, it’s that the enemy deserves no mercy.
