The 38th European Film Awards were handed out in Berlin on Saturday night, and “Sentimental Value” and “Sirat” dominated the ceremony. Both films are potential nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, but “Sentimental” took six honors incluing Best European Film and European Director for Joachim Trier. Olivier Laxe’s “Sirat” was right behind with five awards.

Stellan Skarsgard also won European Actor for “Sentimental Value,” his first win since 1998. Renate Reinsve took Best Actress, her first win on her third nomination. “Sentimental’s” Eskil Vogt and Trier took European Screenplay. The Cannes Film Festival prize winner also saw Hania Rani win the European Composer honor.
“Sirat” took a slew of below-the-line trophies, including European Casting, European Production Design, European Editor, European Cinematographer, and European Sound.
“Arco” won the European Animated Film Award. It should be one of the five Animated Feature Oscar nominees announced on Thursday. “Fiume O Morte!” took the European Documentary Award.
Liv Ullman received the European Lifetime Achievement Award.
