Ryan Reynolds & Kenneth Branagh Star In Action Flick 'Mayday'

Canadian action star Ryan Reynolds may be currently working on Marvel’s “Deadpool 3,” but that doesn’t mean he can’t line up other big projects for the future. He’s reportedly set to reunite with Skydance Media for a new film at Apple Original Films, as Deadline reveals he’ll star alongside director/actor Kenneth Branagh in “Mayday.”

The action-adventure flick hails from “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” filmmaking duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who had some decent success recently with their fantasy-comedy based on the beloved table-top role playing game. And luckily, the pair penned the “Mayday” script and completed it ahead of the WGA strike. Moviegoers should expect comedic elements mixed into the action stuff given Goldstein and Daley’s previous work such as “Game Night,” “Horrible Bosses,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

Plot and characters are under lock-and-key, but “Mayday” is based on an original pitch from the writer/directors. The title suggest some sort of disaster element, and it’s safe to assume that Reynolds will play a heroic figure. As for Branagh, the actor may either be friend or foe in this one, having played a major villain in Christopher Nolan‘s “Tenet,” but also leads his Agatha Christie whodunnit franchise at 20th Century Studios as the iconic detective Hercule Poirot (seen next in “A Haunting In Venice” in a few months).

Deadline also suggests that it could be the very next film for Reynolds assuming he completes “Deadpool 3” on time, although there doesn’t seem to be a production window for it at the moment. Skydance and Reynolds previously worked together on “6 Underground” and “The Adam Project,” so there’s a productive relationship there. It’ll be curious to see if “Mayday” materializes as another franchise project for the actor or if it’s just another one-and-done assignment like Reynold’s aforementioned Netflix movies.
