We’re still waiting to see what happens with the mainline “Star Trek” film franchise, as the studio has been trying to get a fourth film going with the J.J. Abrams cast and even attempted an oddball standalone film from Quentin Tarantino that kept fans on their toes trying to learn not only what it would be about and what poccessed him to develop someone else’s IP in the first place.
Franchise actor Simon Pegg (“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”) recently spoke at Fan Expo Boston (via Collider, who moderated the panel), briefly commenting on the Tarantino script without exactly talking about exact details, but called it “bats*** crazy” and was curious if fans would ultimately embrace it.

“That was what we call in the business batshit crazy,” Pegg said at the event. “It was everything you would expect a Quentin Tarantino ‘Star Trek’ script to be…I don’t know how it would have gone over with the fans, but it certainly would have been an interesting thing.”
Tarantino had been tasked to develop a mysterious “Star Trek” with screenwriter Mark L. Smith (“The Revenant”), but like with a handful of other would-be Tarantino projects didn’t end up getting made as even “Star Trek 4” is still a huge question mark for Paramount (maybe after the recent merger with Skydance there will be more movement).
However, on the other hand, Pegg sounds rather optimistic that David Ellison of Skydance could finally bring “Star Trek 4” together after multiple misfires, as the studio has new oversight and potentially renewed desire to make the sci-fi adventure sequel.
“Now the merger’s happened, and David’s always been a big supporter of the Kelvin timeline. So who knows, maybe we’ll get to make another one.”
You might remember that Pegg was also a creative contributor to the recent films, having earned a screenwriting credit on the “Star Trek Beyond” script alongside Doug Jung, who is the showrunner of the Jason Momoa series “Chief of War” and is developing the “Mass Effect” series at Prime Video.
We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Paramount returns to the film side of things after spending its time mostly focused on expanding the television side of the franchise with live-action and animated shows for Paramount+.
