'Strange New Worlds': CBS All Access Lands Yet Another 'Star Trek' Spin-Off Series

If CBS All Access is in fact getting a new name (as is being speculated), the folks at ViacomCBS might as well just call it the “Star Trek” Streaming Network. After a fairly rough start to the streaming service, it’s clear that All Access is being kept alive by the various ‘Trek’ series. And proving that point is the brand-new announcement of yet another spin-off of the sci-fi franchise.

According to Deadline, CBS All Access has given the greenlight for a new “Star Trek” series, titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” which will star Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Rebecca Romijn reprising their roles from Season 2 of ‘Discovery.’ The trio of actors, who play Spock, Captain Pike, and Number One, respectively, all announced the new series and their excitement to star in the spin-off in a video released by CBS.

Details are still forthcoming about the story of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ but it is said to pick up pretty soon after the finale of Season 2 of ‘Discovery.’ The new series is written by Akiva Goldsman, who has worked closely with Alex Kurtzman on various series in the ever-growing “Star Trek” TV universe.

“This is a dream come true, literally,” Goldsman said. “I have imagined myself on the bridge of the Enterprise since the early 1970s. I’m honored to be a part of this continuing journey along with Alex, Henry and the fine folks at CBS.”

CBS All Access’ Head of Programming, Julie McNamara, said, “Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on ‘Star Trek Discovery’ last season. This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to ‘Star Trek.’”

‘Strange New Worlds’ joins ‘Discovery’ and ‘Picard’ as the live-action “Star Trek” series currently airing on CBS All Access. In addition, there’s “Star Trek: Short Treks,” as well as the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” And apparently, Nickelodeon is even getting an animated “Star Trek” series, as well.
