It’s clear that “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will go down as one of the most debated entries in the franchise. Five months after its release, no matter what the news is about ‘Star Wars,’ fans light up the comments fighting over whether or not filmmaker Rian Johnson has ruined their favorite film series. However, with J.J. Abrams coming on to finish out the new trilogy, many thought that the ghost of Rian Johnson would be gone for good from the galaxy far, far away. But maybe not.
According to “sources” close to the New York Daily News, there’s one surprise from ‘The Last Jedi’ that will carry over into the upcoming ‘Episode IX.’ Their sources say that Yoda, the littlest, greenest Jedi Master, will come back to help guide Rey in the final installment of this new trilogy.
“The success of the scenes featuring Yoda in ‘The Last Jedi’ were huge,” says the source. “Yoda will again appear as a ghost as he acknowledges Rey’s success and growth as a Jedi. The scenes are due to be put together later this year.”
Appearing in a surprise cameo in ‘The Last Jedi,’ which forced Frank Oz to act a bit like a spy on the studio lot, fans were shocked to see Yoda appear as a Force ghost to give Luke Skywalker a final bit of sage advice. The cameo was one of the few elements of ‘The Last Jedi’ that most fans can agree was good. Although some might disagree with the scene itself (you can’t please everyone), Yoda’s appearance was a highlight in the film.
Many saw his appearance in ‘The Last Jedi’ as a sort of “sending off” for Yoda. They have predicted that if any Jedi were to appear as a Force ghost in the upcoming sequel, then it would probably be Luke Skywalker, himself.
However, with the success of the Yoda cameo, compounded with actor Mark Hamill’s hinting that he is officially done with the series, it makes sense that we might see the tiny Jedi one more time.
