Steven Spielberg And Alan Alda Earning Major Guild Honors

Another day, another round of honorees for the upcoming slate of award season ceremonies and telecasts.  Today, Steven Spielberg and Alan Alda are your recipients of Hollywood guild adoration.

Spielberg will be feted by the Cinema Audio Society with their annual Filmmaker Award at the 55th Annual CAS Awards on Feb. 16th. This appears long overdue with previous winners including Joe Wright, Jon Favreau, Jay Roach, Richard Linklater, Edward Zwick, Jonathan Demme, Rob Marshall, Taylor Hackford, Henry Selick, Paul Mazursky, Bill Condon, Gil Cates and Quentin Tarantino.

In a statement, CAS President Mark Ulan noted, “I am thrilled to announce Steven Spielberg as the CAS Filmmaker Honoree for our 55th CAS Awards. The CAS has recognized Steven’s commitment to sound multiple times, with nominations for Outstanding Sound Mixing and a win for ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ And, most importantly, we recognize that Steven has had relationships with sound mixers that span more than 25 projects—a strong indicator that a director values the role of sound. Steven has long embraced the creative importance of sound for his storytelling and all his projects beautifully reflect this commitment.”

It is more than likely Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” will earn a CAS nod in January.

The 82-year-old Alda will earn the prestigious SAG Awards Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th SAG Awards on Jan. 27. Recent recipients include Rita Moreno, Lily Tomlin, Morgan Freeman, Carol Burnett, Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.

SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris remarked, “It is an honor and privilege to announce that our SAG Life Achievement Award will be presented to the fabulous Alan Alda. He is an artist whose body of work is a testament to the craft and the magic of our business. His ability to make us laugh, to think and to feel is extraordinary. From theater to television, movies, and new media Alan’s dedication and talent are exceeded only by his contributions to a just and caring society.”

Alda is best known to many for his role in the TV series “M*A*S*H” but his other notable credits include films such an Oscar-nominated turn in “The Aviator” as well as “The Four Seasons,” “California Suite,” “Sweet Liberty” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors.” He’s a six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner mostly for his work on “M*A*S*H” and a three-time Tony Award nominee. He recently appeared on an arc on “The Good Fight.”
