'Sunset' Trailer: Oscar-Winning Filmmaker László Nemes Returns With Another Stunning Awards Contender

We’ve said it a million times, but 2018 seems to be one of the strongest years in foreign film in ages. With “Roma” getting an immense amount of Oscar buzz, and films like “Burning,” “Shoplifters,” and “Cold War” routinely showing up in Best of 2018 lists, there’s no shortage of worthy international films available. However, one of the films that debuted to critical acclaim during the festival circuit but seems to be fairly low-key at this point is László Nemes’ “Sunset.”

After winning the FIPRESCI prize at the Venice Film Festival, “Sunset” is gearing up for its official theatrical release thanks to Sony Pictures Classic. In the new trailer for the film, we get a great look at what Nemes has accomplished in his period film about a woman attempting to take over her family’s store in 1913 Budapest, but quickly realizing there’s more to the story of her heritage than what she realized. The costuming is beautiful. The music is fantastic. And star Julie Jakab clearly is giving the performance of her career, just based on the short footage seen here.

“Sunset” is the follow-up film for writer-director Nemes, after winning the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film for his 2015 movie “Son of Saul.” “Sunset” stars Jakab, Vlad Ivanov, Evelin Dobos, and Marcin Czarnik.

Sony Pictures Classics hasn’t released an official date for the film, but it is expected in 2019.

Here’s the synopsis:

1913, Budapest, in the heart of Europe as World War I approaches. The young Irisz Leiter arrives in the Hungarian capital with high hopes to work as a milliner at Leiter, the legendary hat store that once belonged to her late parents; but she is quickly sent away by the new owner, Oszkár Brill. While preparations are under way at the store to host important wealthy, royal guests, a man abruptly comes to Irisz looking for Kálmán Leiter, who he says is her brother. Refusing to leave the city, the young woman follows Kálmán’s tracks, her only link to a lost past. Her quest brings her through the dark, dusty streets of Budapest, where only the Leiter hat store shines, into the turmoil of a civilization on the eve of its downfall.
