Black Panther, The Favourite, Pose Make AFI's Top Ten Lists Of 2018

The American Film Institute announced their year-end top 10 lists this year and the only real surprise is the continued love for “First Reformed.” Paul Schrader’s drama joined “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “Eighth Grade,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “The Favourite,” “Green Book,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Quiet Place” and “A Star is Born” on the top 10 list of AFI Movies of the Year.

On the television side, five new shows made the cut including “Barry,” “Pose,” “Succession,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” and “The Kominsky Method.”

“Roma” was ineligible for the film list because of its foreign financing and creative team, but was honored with a special award by the committee.

Notable snubs on the movie side included “First Man,” “Widows,” “The Front Runner,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”  Television snubs included “Sharp Objects,” “Homecoming” and “Maniac.”

It should be noted that while making the AFI Movies of the Year list can seem like a precursor to a Best Picture nomination, they often miss out on two of the Academy’s picks. In 2017 and 2016 only seven of the 10 recipients earned Best Picture nods. In 2015, just six. So, which three likely won’t make the cut this year?  Ponder.

Here are this year’s honorees.

“Roma”

As usual, this year’s juries — one for film and one for television — were chaired by AFI Board of Trustees Vice Chairs Tom Pollock (former Vice Chairman of MCA, Chairman of Universal Pictures) for film and Richard Frank (former Chairman of Walt Disney Television, President of Walt Disney Studios, President of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) for television. The juries included David Benioff, Joan Chen, Courtney B. Vance, Alfre Woodard, and Leonard Maltin, among others.

The annual AFI Awards will be celebrated at a luncheon on Jan. 4.
