'Superman: Legacy': James Gunn's Reboot Film To Hit Theaters July 11, 2025

According to Warners, James Gunn’s previously untitled Superman film is now known as “Superman: Legacy” and will likely serve as the kickoff point for this new DC Universe of films and TV series. As we already knew, the film is expected to take place in the earlier years of Superman, as he’s getting into his career as a journalist and just meeting Lois Lane and the rest of his iconic supporting cast. And we also know the release date, as “Superman: Legacy” is expected to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025. Warner Bros says the film will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.

It would appear, with this 2025 release date, James Gunn and Peter Safran want “Superman: Legacy” to be the project that ushers in the new era of DC Universe storytelling. With a younger Man of Steel, it’s clear this new DC Studios initiative is to focus on showcasing these characters in their most classic iterations without all of the baggage of the previous films. And yes, that means there is no Henry Cavill attached to this film, which has been a major sore spot for some fans who were hoping to see the actor finally get his definitive Superman performance.

The fairly aggressive release date also makes it seem as if “Superman: Legacy” is much further along the production track than we previously knew. It’s clear DC Studios wants to get the ball rolling ASAP and isn’t going to let time waste.

“Superman: Legacy” is expected to arrive in theaters on July 11, 2025.
