Trailer For Teresa Palmer Drama ‘Ride Like A Girl’ Doesn’t Have Character Saying Film’s Title

You know what I’m talking about. There’s always a moment of weird meta thrill where a character in a movie looks just barely off-camera and says the title of the film you’re currently watching. Most of the time it is a cringe-worthy moment that makes you look away embarrassed, like Will Smith in “Suicide Squad,” but other times it just makes things click into place and results in an awe-inspiring moment like in “Jurassic Park.” No matter what you think of these moments, you always know when they’re coming, because the filmmakers literally stop the film and focus on the character uttering the film’s title.

Sadly, there’s nothing like that in the trailer for Rachel Griffith’s feature directorial debut, “Ride Like A Girl.” Instead, the trailer tells the real-life story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup, the biggest two-mile race in horse-racing. Palmer plays Payne, who grew up in a rambunctious house with nine siblings and a widower dad, played by Sam Neill. After being warned that “a girl is never going to win the Melbourne Cup,” the film follows Michelle’s hard-fought attempts to enter the male-dominated sport of horse-racing as she challenger the gender roles she is being pressured to follow. Also starring in the film is Stevie Payne, real-life brother of Michelle, who plays himself.

We don’t yet know if someone utters the words “Ride Like A Girl” in the film, but we already see that Rachel Griffith’s feature directorial debut will be a very emotional and uplifting biopic.

“Ride Like A Girl” is out in Australian theaters, no word on American distribution just yet. You can watch the trailer below.
