New, Mystery Terrence Malick Project Teased As Extended ‘Tree Of Life’ Prepares Venice Debut

Look, we get excited as anyone else at the thought of any new project from filmmaker Terrence Malick. So, naturally, when we see a post on FB, with an image that would lead us to believe that the director is working on something, our little cinephile hearts will skip a beat. It’s just that, with this recent image, we just don’t know what, exactly, we need to get excited about.

Let’s unpack this a bit more, shall we?

Over the weekend, cinematographer Monika Lenczewska posted an image to her Facebook account of a clapperboard (dated September 1) with the title “Nexus” and the names T. Malick and M. Lenczewska listed as director and DP, respectively. She accompanied this mysterious image with the message “Thank you Austin!” and a quote from “Tree of Life.” But no more info than that. Well, that must mean that there’s new Malick on the way, right? Well, not so fast.

This image was shared on the One Big Soul Terrence Malick appreciation group, which is run by someone that definitely has knowledge of what the filmmaker is working on. As fans frantically ask what the hell is going on, the group replied, “It’s NOT a new film but we can’t say more at this point.”

Okay, so that only leaves a few options. At least, we think.

First, we all know that “Tree of Life” is featured at this year’s Venice Film Festival, where a new 3-hour cut of the film will be shown. Could this be some quick little bit to accompany that? Maybe an additional scene or two? Judging by the dates, that would be unlikely, considering that’s a lot of work to get done in such a short amount of time.

There’s also the option that could have been working on some sort of “Voyage of Time” addendum, right? Would you really be surprised if you found out that Malick was revisiting that work? Probably not.

And lastly, and probably more likely than anything, it’s none of the above, and something we just will have to wait and see about. But, where’s the fun in that? It’s Malick! We want to know!

Regardless what this new project might be, the extended cut of “Tree of Life” hits Venice later this week.
