'The White Lotus' Wins Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series

Those looking for upsets at the 74th Emmy Awards will have to look somewhere other than the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category. As expected, frontrunner “The White Lotus” topped a crowded field of limited and anthology shows, besting “Dopesick,” “Inventing Anna,” “Pam & Tommy,” and “The Dropout” to bring home the Emmy.

HBO’s dark comedy series caught the attention of viewers early, breaking out amidst a sea of prestige television to become one of the frontrunners for the Limited Series Emmy award. In the hands of Mike White—a writer and director who has built his career around uncomfortable humor—”The White Lotus” tapped into the classism and existential crises that underpins our current moment in time. Oh, and it certainly didn’t hurt that “The White Lotus” introduced a whole new generation to Jennifer Coolidge, the comedy icon who was also nominated for Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series.

But if fans were quick to embrace “The White Lotus,” its erstwhile cable company wasn’t far behind. Last August, HBO renewed the limited series for a second season, announcing that the show would take an anthology approach with a new location and new guests. Over the new few months, HBO would announce a slew of stars, including – but not limited to – Aubrey Plaza, Haley Lu Richardson, F. Murray Abraham, and Michael Imperioli.

And while “The White Lotus” was nominated for a slew of Emmys – 20 in total, including eight in acting categories – this award must be the cherry on top for both platform and creatives. Now all that’s left is to see if White and company can keep things rolling with a successful second season. Something tells me “The White Lotus” is far from a one-hit-wonder.
