'Thoroughbreds' & 'Flower' Subvert Female Tropes, But One More Memorably Than The Other [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

Nihilism loves consequences, even if a movie does not…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I discuss “Thoroughbreds” and “Flower,” a pair of new smaller release films led by strong young female performances. Both films go to some deeply troubling, dark places but they each handle that always tricky edgy/comic balance differently. The Playlist has reviewed both of them at different 2017 festivals (here and here), but we get into depth as to why one is much better than the other. Suffice to say we prefer only one of these films. Tune in to find out!

I also make some time personally to shout out a great new foreign release currently making the arthouse rounds, Oscar-nominated “Loveless,” an unsparing, brilliantly composed work by Russian master Andrey Zvyagintsev (“Elena,” “Leviathan“). It’s another towering work by one of the very best filmmakers working today. I’m utterly entranced by this guy’s slow-burn filmmaking which is never boring and instead always plowing forward. It’s a gorgeous thriller about miserable people that’s worth journey. (Read The Playlist’s review from last year’s Cannes Film Festival here.)
