Tribeca 2023 Festival: 20 Films To Watch

“The Lesson”
Richard E. Grant, Julie Delpy, and Daryl McCormack return to Tribeca in Alice Troughton’s film “The Lesson.” Unable to find inspiration, author Liam takes on the task of tutoring the son of a legendary writer and his wife. Soon, lies begin to unravel, and the three find themselves in a saga of jealousy and betrayal and a battle of wits in which everyone has something to lose.

“LaRoy”
Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Shane Atkinson, this is a comedic thriller that follows a co-owner of a hardware store who can’t believe he married the local beauty queen. When Ray learns that his wife has been having an affair, he decides he is going to kill himself, but before he can, he is mistaken for a hitman. “LaRoy” stars John Magaro, Steve Zahn, and Dylan Baker.

“Our Son”
Partners Gabriel and Nicky have been together for thirteen years but find themselves headed for divorce when stress and anxiety lead them to an unrepairable place. Having to figure out how to inform their friends and family of their deteriorating relationship is going to be the easy part now that they find themselves on a journey of their individual self-discovery while having to support and co-parent. Gabriel and Nicky are played by Billy Porter and Luke Evans, respectively. The film is directed by Bill Oliver

“Downtown Owl”
When a small town in North Dakota is about to get hit in a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm, the lead-up to brings three very different people together. Lily Rabe plays newbie teacher Julia, August Blanco Rosenstein plays depressed quarterback Mitch, and Ed Harris plays nostalgic football fan Horace. The cast is rounded out by Vanessa Hudgens, Jack Dylan Grazer, Arianna Jaffier, Finn Wittrock, and Henry Golding. “Downtown Owl” is co-directed by Rabe and Hamish Linklater

“Bucky F*cking Dent”
“Bucky F*cking Dent” follows Yankee Stadium peanut slinger Ted who is writing a novel in his spare time. When Ted discovers his dad, a Red Sox fan, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, he returns home to take care of him. When Ted’s father’s health drops after a Red Sox loss, Ted and some locals manufacture a winning streak… But Bucky Dent is sitting in the wings.  The film was written and directed by David Duchovny, based on his own novel. He also stars in the film alongside Logan Marshall-Green and Stephanie Beatriz.
