Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” had a successful four-season run on Netflix that concluded last year. However, it didn’t take long for the streaming service to dust off the franchise and go for one last hurrah. This time, instead of a new season, ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ is returning as an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure film, titled “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend.”

As the title implies, ‘Kimmy vs. The Reverend’ finds the adorable, lovable Kimmy planning her wedding to a handsome British man when everything gets thrown into chaos as she realizes that there was perhaps another underground bunker that housed other girls that were being imprisoned by the evil Reverend. So, Kimmy must decide between planning her wedding or rescuing girls. Or better yet, you have to decide.

You see, ‘Kimmy vs. The Reverend’ follows the same structure and technology of the ‘Black Mirror’ film “Bandersnatch.” Utilizing that film’s groundbreaking technology, viewers are able to control the decisions that Kimmy and the cast make throughout the film. The new special stars Ellie Kemper, Titus Burgess, Daniel Radcliffe, Jane Krakowski, and Jon Hamm.

Producer/co-creator Tina Fey explained where the idea of the new special came from, “We immediately felt like it would be a real match for our universe, and particularly the tone of the comedy that we do with Kimmy Schmidt because it’s this densely joke populated and sometimes absurdist comedy. We thought it would be a really nice fit. We were also really excited because as a crew, we were sad to be wrapping up the series. It was nice to know that there would be this one final hurrah, this nice button on the series, and that we would be able to work together again.”

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend” arrives on Netflix on May 12.
