'Underground Railroad' First Look: Barry Jenkins' New Amazon Series Finally Revealed In New Photos

It’s been nearly two years since the release of Barry Jenkins‘ last feature, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” But that doesn’t mean Jenkins has taken a break. In fact, he’s kept pretty damn busy with his first TV series, Amazon’s upcoming drama, “The Underground Railroad.”

While we still don’t have an official release date for the upcoming series, Amazon has decided to go ahead and reveal some first-look photos from the production of “Underground Railroad.” The series, as the title suggests, follows the story of the Civil War-era network of people that would allow slaves to find their way to freedom. Of course, the Underground Railroad never guaranteed safe passage, as it required a ton of deception and secrecy.

Unlike many of the other limited series that have high-profile filmmakers attached, “Underground Railroad” is entirely written and directed by Jenkins. This means it is a true follow-up to ‘Beale Street’ and his Oscar-winning breakout feature, “Moonlight,” as it is completely from the mind of Jenkins himself.

But “Underground Railroad” is far from the only project Jenkins is currently working on. We just found out yesterday that the filmmaker has been signed by Disney to direct the next ‘Lion King‘ live-action film. In addition, he’s supposed to helm an Alvin Ailey biopic, as well as script the upcoming “Virunga” adaptation. Then, there’s that little thing called “The Knick” that he is apparently reviving with star Andre Holland.

However, before we get to all of that, we have “Underground Railroad.” And you can see the first-look photos from that series below:
