Universal Gets 'Larry Crowne'; Hugo Weaving Chats 'The Hobbit' & 'Cars 2' Retains June 24, 2011 Pole Position

Universal has snapped up to the rights to the Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts comedy “Larry Crowne,” which Hanks has written and will be directing. The film is about a man who is forced to find a new career and reinvent himself as he enters the second half of his life. Filming begins in April.

Hugo Weaving has revealed that he’s being eyed to return to the forthcoming two-part adaptation of “The Hobbit.” “…what I’ve heard is that, yeah, they’re interested in me. I haven’t had any conversations, and I haven’t read any scripts because they’re being closely guarded,” Weaving said. Of course, he’s interested in returning and would love to work with Del Toro.

ComingSoon has corrected their earlier report that “Cars 2” release date had been pushed back to December 2011. The film will still arrive, as planned, on June 24, 2011.

Roadside Pictures has acquired the rights to “Princess Ka’iulani” (formerly known as “Barbarian Princess”) the biopic about the titular royalty of Hawaii’s former monarchy. Q’orianka Kilcher, Barry Pepper, Shaun Evans and Will Patton star in the film directed by Marc Forby. The film will hit theaters in late spring, with Lionsgate handing the DVD release.

Finally, Katherine Heigl has signed on to make another horrible film. She will star in “One For the Money” based on Janet Evanovich’s series of Stephanie Plum novels. Heigl will play “an unemployed lingerie buyer who becomes a bounty hunter to make ends meet.” Ugh.
