When director Paul Feig isn’t breaking fans’ hearts by shooting down rumors of a “Freaks and Geeks” movie, he’s working behind the camera; his latest film, “The Heat,” comes out next Friday. With that, let’s discuss Feig’s possible next project, and look at a few clips from his upcoming film.
The Wrap reports that Feig has signed on, and is ramping up production, on his next project; a spy film entitled “Susan Cooper” (not connected to the author of the same name). Described as a “realistic comedy about a female James Bond,” Feig is searching for a leading lady to play the eponymous role in the hopes that the film has franchise potential for 20th Century Fox. With a successful, female-driven comedy under his belt — 2011’s breakout hit “Bridesmaids” — Feig has gone on record bemoaning the lack of female-driven projects in Hollywood and sees “Susan Cooper” as another project that could propel more women into leading roles. If you’re wondering if “Susan Cooper” is the top-secret project Feig was working on with “The Heat” writer Katie Dippold back in April, you’d be incorrect. The Wrap reveals a bit more about that project, calling it a mother-daughter comedy, but its unknown where that will fall on Feig’s schedule.
With that, 20th Century Fox wants you understand two things about “The Heat:” Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are funny, and that the movie is embracing its R-rating. A host of clips, both green-band and red-band have been revealed, all with an eye towards showcasing the comedy of the ladies and McCarthy’s foul mouth. Three clips here all have varying levels of comedy, but the red-band clip in particular emphasizes the ladies won’t be reining in their language. The question remains whether the duo has the ability to provide the laughs, and if the R-rating will be a crutch in lieu of genuine comedy.
