Watch: First Trailer For 'Room 237' Director Rodney Ascher's New Documentary ‘The Nightmare’

The NightmareThree years ago, Rodney Ascher rolled up his sleeves and went elbows deep into the wild conspiracy theories and interpretations of Stanley Kubrick‘s horror classic "The Shining" with "Room 237." After a stint directing a segment for "The ABCs of Death 2," the filmmaker is now chronicling a very real terror in "The Nightmare," and the first trailer for the documentary is here.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January, at hitting SXSW in the spring, the movie chronicles eight different people who suffer from night terrors and sleep paralysis, which finds them trapped in awakened states of semi-consciousness, where they witness truly horrific visions, but are unable to move. While the premise is intriguing, the movie didn’t quite work for our critic in Park City, who said "too-many jump scares becomes a tired technique" in the picture.

"The Nightmare" is currently screening at Hot Docs. It opens in limited release and hits VOD on June 5th.
