Watch The World End In New ‘Geostorm’ Trailer

As an audience, we’ve gone from simple tornado movies like “Twister” to the world is dying movies like “2012” and “The Day After Tomorrow,” so what does “Geostorm” bring to the table that’s new and exciting? According to the new trailer, released today, a malfunctioning weather satellite. Yep, “Geostorm” is about a weather-controlling technology that goes crazy and, you guessed it, almost destroys the world.

When the first teaser trailer dropped for “Geostorm” earlier this year, people saw the footage, understood who’s responsible for making the film, and groaned. You know what to expect from a disaster movie produced by Dean Devlin. However, with “Geostorm,” the man who wrote “Independence Day” and “Independence Day: Resurgence” is pulling triple duty to write, produce, and direct the film. So yeah, lots of crap gets destroyed.

The new “Geostorm” trailer is exactly what you expect from this type of film. Close your eyes and imagine a modern-day disaster movie, except this time, the world’s last hope for survival is Gerard Butler, and he gets shot into space to save Earth, so you know exactly what tone and style this film is going for. Here’s the official synopsis:

After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.

As cynical as you can be about this film — and trust us, you are allowed to be cynical –  this film will probably make a ton of money. Audiences still love a good effects-heavy disaster fest. Plus, this film has a release date in the fall, where there’s no summer box office pressure and the prestige films start to make their debuts. So audiences could be clamoring for yet another end-of-the-world film.

Co-starring Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Daniel Wu, Ed Harris, and Andy Garcia, “Geostorm” opens on October 20th.
