“Star Trek,” the television series, was set in the 23rd century and followed the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they explored the galaxy. It starred William Shatner as Captain Kirk, alongside Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, and Nichelle Nichols. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the show ran for three seasons before getting canceled.

In 1979, ten years after “Star Trek” was canceled by NBC and after extensive delays, Paramount released the feature film “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” The film saw the original cast return to board the U.S.S Enterprise and defend the United Federation of Planets when an alien spacecraft of enormous power is spotted approaching Earth. The film became the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award nominations. The cancelation of the TV show, which led to the release of the show on syndication and the release of the first film, led to the Star Trek franchise becoming a pop-culture phenomenon. In 2001, director Robert Wise revisited the film to enhance the visual effects for its standard definition DVD release. Now, the film has been prepared for 4K Ultra HD.
