A decade after “The Night Of,” Steven Zaillian and Richard Price are reuniting for another limited crime series. The pair are co-writing “Ghettoside,” a six-episode project that Netflix has reportedly greenlit based on multiple completed scripts.
According to Deadline, the series is expected to use Jill Leovy’s 2015 nonfiction book “Ghettoside: A True Story Of Murder In America” as source material. The title remains tentative, and some details—including rights issues—are apparently still being finalized. Netflix declined to comment.
Zaillian and Price previously collaborated on “The Night Of,” the acclaimed 2016 HBO crime drama starring Riz Ahmed and John Turturro. The eight-part limited series—acclaimed but still underrated and arguably one of the best miniseries of that decade—examined a New York murder case from multiple perspectives within the criminal justice system, earning 13 Emmy nominations and five wins, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for Ahmed.
Both writers arrive at “Ghettoside” with formidable crime-drama credentials. Zaillian is a five-time Academy Award nominee who won Best Adapted Screenplay for “Schindler’s List.” His other Oscar-nominated screenplays include “Awakenings,” “Gangs Of New York,” “Moneyball,” and “The Irishman.” Price received an Oscar nomination for adapting “The Color Of Money” and has written for “The Wire,” “The Deuce,” and “We Own This City,” in addition to novels including “Clockers” and “Lush Life.”
“Ghettoside” will also extend Zaillian’s relationship with Netflix following “Ripley,” his black-and-white Patricia Highsmith adaptation starring Andrew Scott, Dakota Fanning, and Johnny Flynn. Written, directed, and executive produced by Zaillian, the series received 13 Emmy nominations—including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, writing, directing, and lead actor for Scott—and won four. Zaillian took home the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Garrett Basch, who worked with Zaillian on both “The Night Of” and “Ripley,” will executive produce the new series with Zaillian and Price. Basch is also behind the FX projects “The Lowdown,” “Very Young Frankenstein,” and “Seven Sisters.” No cast, production timetable, or release window has been announced, but this will definitely be one of the most anticipated series, whatever year it comes out.
