'World War Z': Mireille Enos Says Sequel Development With David Fincher Seems To Be Cursed

Though the film might not be the greatest horror film of all time nor the best example of a legendary Brad Pitt performance (though it is a horror film better than it has any right to be and Pitt never phones it in), “World War Z” is still a film that gets brought up every so often as a lost opportunity. You see, for years now, a sequel to the film has been in development with none other than David Fincher attached to direct and Pitt returning. But it never happened. And according to one of the film’s stars, Mireille Enos, that’s a damn shame.

Speaking to Variety about her role in Amazon’s hit series, “Hanna,” Enos was asked about the development of the seemingly dead “World War Z 2.” And unfortunately, the actress confirms what many have already reported over the years— ‘WWZ2’ was really close to getting made with Fincher on board to direct, but it’s likely never going to happen.

“It seems to have a little curse hanging over it,” Enos said. “We were all lined up to go. We had Fincher, we had a beautiful script and then it just didn’t happen. “

She added, “It seems like such a shame for it not to be made. The first one was so good.”

It was confirmed that Fincher was aboard “World War Z 2” with Paramount hoping that the film would begin production as soon as possible. The first film, directed by Marc Forster, was a pretty big box office success for the studio, despite having to reshoot most of the third act. And with Paramount desperate for franchises, the studio was hoping that Fincher would be able to make ‘WWZ2’ an even bigger hit. Unfortunately, back in 2019, we reported that the studio had given up hope for the sequel, seemingly putting it back on the shelf for the foreseeable future.

And with the window of opportunity seemingly closed for reuniting Fincher and Pitt for a sequel, the idea that Paramount gets another film up and going with a new cast and crew is highly unlikely almost a decade after the first feature premiered. So, much to the dismay of Enos and film fans, even though hope remains, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get that “World War Z” sequel we were promised.
