‘Worth’ Trailer: Michael Keaton & Stanley Tucci Headline A Drama Set During The 9/11 Aftermath

With awards season just around the corner, Netflix is beginning to roll out its would-be contenders. With a prestigious cast and potent source material, “Worth” might be the most promising of the bunch.

Based on the memoir “What is Life Worth?” by attorney Kenneth Feinberg, the film chronicles the struggle to deliver financial compensation to the many families who lost loved ones in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A month after the attacks, Feinberg was appointed special master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, which would award $7 billion to victims.  Michael Keaton will star as Feinberg, with fellow Oscar nominees Stanley Tucci and Amy Ryan in supporting roles. (Keaton and Tucci previously appeared together in 2016’s Best Picture winner “Spotlight.”) Other players include Tate Donovan, Marc Maron, and Tony Award nominee Laura Benanti

The screenplay by Matt Borenstein had been a hot commodity since 2008 when it was featured on the Black List survey, which compiles the most popular unproduced scripts in Hollywood. The project was finally greenlit in 2018, to be directed by David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “Marley & Me”). However, Frankel was replaced by Sara Colangelo (“Little Accidents,” “The Kindergarten Teacher”) before production began in April 2019. Meanwhile, Borenstein has gone on to success as a writer for Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse movies, including “Godzilla,” “Kong: Skull Island,” and “Godzilla vs. Kong.” He co-produced “Worth” alongside MadRiver Pictures’ Marc Butan (“Trial of the Chicago 7”) and “Spotlight” producer Michael Sugar, et al.

The film initially premiered in January 2020 at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, but a wider release wasn’t forthcoming for over a year. At long last, Netflix acquired the distribution rights in February. Its release has been coordinated to coincide with the 20th anniversary of 9/11.    “Worth” is scheduled to hit theaters and arrive on Netflix on September 3.
