Daniel Craig Wants Denis Villeneuve For James Bond

Denis Villeneuve‘s career thus far has been marked by a desire to pursue original storytelling. From his breakthrough, Oscar-nominated “Incendies,” the filmmaker has climbed his way up the ladder, taking on great scripts, and turning out unique, intelligent, and stylish films like “Prisoners,” “Enemy,” “Sicario,” and “Arrival.” But for the first time in his nearly three-decade career, Villeneuve is being lured by blockbusters. In a couple weeks, “Blade Runner 2049” will hit multiplexes, and he’s currently attached to continue his sci-fi streak with “Dune.” However, one of the biggest cinematic series ever might be calling.

The next James Bond movie already has a release date, but no director has been announced. Yann Demange, Denis Villenueve and David MacKenzie were all reported to be frontrunners for the gig this summer, with the trades suggesting Demange, who helmed ” ’71” and the upcoming Matthew McConaughey joint “White Boy Rick,” as the likely candidate. However, Daniel Craig holds powerful sway over creative decisions at this point, and according to Baz Bamigboye, he’s keen on Villeneuve.

From here, we’ll just have to wait and see how this all plays out. Will Villeneuve jump from one mega franchise machine to another? If he wants to do Bond will he be able to put aside “Dune”? Or will the direct want to pivot back to something a bit smaller before taking on another blockbuster? Those are all questions that need to be answered.

“James Bond 25” opens on November 8, 2019.
