'Wonder Woman' Sequel Reportedly Set In 1980s

Almost the moment it became clear that “Wonder Woman” was a box office hit, sequel talk started swirling. It was just a few weeks ago when it was revealed that DC Films honcho Geoff Johns and director Patty Jenkins had already started writing the followup, and now ScreenRant is claiming to have the details of when it will be set. So, grain of salt and all that.

**Spoilers for “Wonder Woman” ahead**

According to the site, Diana will leap to the 1980s and get thrust into the Cold War, where she’ll face off against the forces of the Soviet Union. Perhaps the most curious detail is that Chris Pine‘s Steve Trevor would also return. How that’s possible considering that he died at the end of “Wonder Woman” is unclear. Even if he somehow lives, presumably we won’t be seeing an elderly version of the character hobbling alongside Diana.

Again, the veracity of this report remains to be seen, but Jenkins herself has remained coy about the fate of Steve Trevor. “All I can say is it was a dilemma. It’s something I hope we don’t talk about in the public [because] I want people to see, but it’s very hard to know which characters will be in the next movie because of the time period, so it’s a big question,” she told Fandango last month.

That being said, reviving Steve Trevor kind of makes sense in the context of a 1930s set “Wonder Woman” sequel, something that Jenkins has previously teased. However, it’s a stretch for even the most ardent fans if the movie is now set six or seven decades after the first movie.

This likely won’t be the last rumor we hear about the “Wonder Woman” sequel, and it’ll be interesting to see how the sequel chatter evolves in the months ahead.
