Danny McBride Says His “Grounded” ‘G.I. Joe’ Film May Shoot Next Year, Features Duke & Won’t Be A Comedy

What’s next for Danny McBride now that “The Righteous Gemstones” is in the rearview mirror? According to a new interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the multi-hyphenate’s next project will be for the big screen: a script for an all-new “G.I. Joe” movie.

“I’ve written one, yes. I’m stoked about it. I’m really fired up about the script,” McBride confirmed to “Happy Sad Confused” hot Josh Horowitz. “Paramount seems fired up about it, so hopefully we’re shooting it next year.” The project will be the first film related to the IP since 2021’s “Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins,” starring Harry Golding, and a complete reboot of the franchise.

But what’s the main source McBride utilized for his script? “It was definitely the cartoons and the comics,” confirmed McBride. “Like “G.I. Joe” was my thing when I was a kid. I liked that more than “Star Wars,” more than anything. Like I loved G.I. Joe. and I still have all the characters. And I tried to give my G.I. Joe collection to my son and he wasn’t interested. You know who’s interested? My daughter who likes robots. That’s who plays with Gung Ho in Snake Eyes in the Shower. But I’ve always loved it.”

McBride’s initial idea for the script wasn’t centered on G.I. Joe, however. Instead, “I had an idea for a Dreadnoks movie,” he said [The Dreadnoks are recurring antagonists in the “G.I. Joe” franchise, a biker gang affiliated with COBRA, and led by Zaratan]. “And I went to Paramount and pitched it, and they were like, ‘well, the franchise kind of needs…to be launched. So we can’t come out with a Dreadnooks movie. Would you….have an angle for G.I. Joe proper? And I was like, hell yeah, I’ll have an angle for that.”

After that meeting with Paramount, McBride sat down with “Righteous Gemstones” writers Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri and “we cracked something that we really love it.” “It’s not a comedy, it’s like kind of suspense and action,” McBride continued. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun. There’s that town in the comic, Springfield, which is a town that’s secretly all COBRA….that is where our film takes place.”

McBride teased that Paramount is very high on the script, and “we have some pretty interesting people lining up to be in it, too. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but it looks like it’s going to be pretty fun.” As for any names already attached to star, McBride didn’t disclose any, but there will likely be several major roles to fill on the ensemble cast.
