12 TV Series To Watch In April: ‘Ripley,’ ‘Sugar,’ ‘The Sympathizer’ & More

Mary & George
Julianne Moore (“May December”) and Nicholas Galitzine (“Red, White & Royal Blue,” “Bottoms”) star in the steamy historical drama “Mary & George.” The series follows Moore’s Countess of Buckingham, who molds her son in order for him to be able to seduce King James I and become his all-powerful lover. The miniseries from D.C. Moore is based on the book “The King’s Assassin” by Benjamin Woolley. Oliver Hermanus (“Living”), Alex Winckler, and Florian Cossen direct. 
Premiere Date: April 5 on Starz.

Under the Bridge
Starring the excellent pair of Riley Keough and recent Academy Award nominee Lily Gladstone, the true crime drama is based on the book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey. The show follows the aftermath of the murder of a young Punjabi teenager and the woman who enters the hidden world of the accused killers. Young filmmaker Quinn Shephard directs and is one of the executive producers.
Premiere Date: April 17 on Hulu. 

Fallout
A post-apocalyptic drama based on the popular video game, the series was created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (a “Captain Marvel” writer) and Graham Wagner (“Silicon Valley”), with “Westworld” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan as executive producers. Nolan also directs several episodes, including the pilot, and the series stars Ella Purnell (“Yellowjackets”), Aaron Moten, and Walton Goggins are among those trying to survive the aftermath of an apocalyptic nuclear exchange that has decimated the planet.
Premiere Date: April 11 on Prime Video.

The Sympathizer” 
You pretty much had us at created by South Korean auteur Park Chan Wook and Canadian writer/director Don McKellar. A historical black comedy espionage drama, the series is about a South Vietnamese refugee who turns out to be a spy for the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War. Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple roles, ala Peter Sellers in “Dr. Strangelove,” and the series stars Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le Kieu Chinh, Sandra Oh, and more. Chan-Wook directs along with Fernando Meirelles and Marc Munden.
Premiere Date: April 14 on HBO and MAX.
