Sam Elliott loves to speak his mind. And unlike when you hear it from some older folks, who are apt to give a funny, truthful statement or anecdote when they don’t have the concern about saying too much, Elliott’s comments recently tend to just be angrier and, well, offensive. This grumpy demeanor even applies when he’s talking about the franchise he just starred in, “Yellowstone.”
During a recent appearance on the WTF Podcast, Sam Elliott talked about his starring role on the “Yellowstone” spinoff series, “1883.” But when the conversation came around to the mothership show, “Yellowstone,” the actor shockingly expressed his displeasure at that series. Not something you see from an actor in a spinoff, but ok.
“I’m not a ‘Yellowstone’ fan. I don’t watch ‘Yellowstone,'” Elliott admitted. “I love [Kevin] Costner. There are a lot of good people on the cast, a few of them I’ve worked with before. Nothing against any of them, but it’s just too much like fucking ‘Dallas’ or something, for me.”
For those younger people in the readership, “Dallas” is the late-‘70s/early-‘80s primetime drama series (basically a soap opera) about a rich family and their struggles in the Texas city. You could say that, on paper, a show about a rich family and their struggles in Montana is very similar. But you shouldn’t probably hear that coming from the star of the original’s spinoff, right?
Obviously, this “Yellowstone” comment sorta jives with his slam of “The Power of the Dog,” where he basically said the film didn’t showcase Westerns and cowboys like he wanted it to because it’s not super macho. (His real comments were way more homophobic.) Apparently, he doesn’t like soap operas either. Probably because they’re for girls, right? Ugh.
Regardless of your thoughts about the quality of “Yellowstone,” it would be common sense to not shit-talk the show that made your highest-profile acting gig in years happen. But again, on the spectrum of dumb Sam Elliott comments recently, this is probably barely a blip on the radar.
