'The Hobbit' Films Won't Be In 3D, Remains To Be Seen If They'll Be Made At All

It’s been a rough summer for fans of “The Hobbit.” With Guillermo del Toro leaving the project, MGM in financial flux, Peter Jackson still not signed on to direct and a greenlight still waiting to be turned on, the project seems to be in dire straits. However, fans did get a small glimmer of good news.

At TheOneRing panel at Comic-Con, staff members of the fansite who pretty much have a direct line to Jackson, confirmed that the films won’t be in 3D, resulting in a hearty cheer from attendees. The format was being considered as early as this past spring with no formal decisions being made. No reasons why the decision was made one way or another, but certainly, by not shooting or converting in 3D, it will shave some dollars off the already expensive production.

Last we heard, the film was aiming for a January shoot and Peter Jackson and co. have been reviewing audition tapes and meeting potential cast members, but as always, until there is money to spend, “The Hobbit” remains at a standstill. [Bleeding Cool]
