Got a Tip?

Even Though It’s Going Online, You’ll Still Have To Watch ‘Community’ Season 6 One Episode At A Time, Each Week

CommunityWhile Yahoo has been producing modest amounts of exclusive video content (such as the underseen faux reality series "Burning Love"), the tech giant is set to challenge the likes of Netflix and Amazon in the "prestige tv" sweepstakes . At the end of June, Yahoo swooped in and saved "Community" from disappearing forever by ordering up a sixth season, and it wasn’t long before movie talks emerged. But will the company squander its most high profile programming asset by presenting it in a week-to-week schedule that viewers (especially online) have long abandoned?

At the Comic-Con panel for "Community" last week, it was revealed that the show’s next season will be written and shot this fall, with the first episodes likely to appear around Christmas at the earliest. The catch? It will be delivered one episode per week. It would seem counterintuitive to stick to that same programming format online, since "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards" have proven that binge watching is the preferred method of the audience likely to watch "Community" in its post-network era. It may be that a viewer would be more willing to give another episode of "Community" a spin if it’s available right away, rather than hoping to remember to watch it the following week.

What to expect? Dan Harmon is figuring it out. "My philosophy is (to) attempt to make the same show, and let the lack of boundaries make themselves felt … I don’t want to take the wheels off so much that people think, ‘Well, this is just some new show,’" he stated.
