“Black Panther” is one of Marvel’s most highly anticipated films ever, and for good reason. For one thing, it’s directed by “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed” director Ryan Coogler, a filmmaker with a genuinely interesting point of view and distinct visual style. For another, it takes place in an entirely new locale for the MCU, The Panther’s home country of Wakanda. There’s a lot that’s new and exciting about this film, and a new poster teases the technologically advanced home of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). Here’s the official “Black Panther” synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

I do wish that the formidable conflict testing the Black Panther would refrain from putting “the entire world at risk.” For once, couldn’t a Marvel superhero just fight a bad guy à la Doc Ock in Raimi‘s “Spider-Man 2” instead of saving the whole world from an impossibly powerful superforce of evil? The stakes can’t always be the fate of the planet; eventually, it’ll get old. I’d argue it already has. Regardless, Coogler has a sterling track record thus far, and if anyone can pull off a “Black Panther” movie, it’s him.
“Black Panther” stars Chadwick Boseman (in the titular role), Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis, and opens on February 16, 2018.
A new trailer was shown at Comic-Con, but wasn’t unveiled online. Further details from the Comic-Con panel below, plus the excellent new poster.
