A “Stranger Things” reunion is happening on Netflix faster than anyone predicted. Well, a reunion of sorts. Deadline reports two alums of the hit series Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour will star together on a new untitled spy series for the streamer from “Adolescence” co-creator Jack Thorne, A24, and producer Joe Hipps. It’s Hopper and Eleven together again in a way, as the plot set-up is a father-daughter espionage thriller.
Losely based on Paul Warner‘s debut novel “A Spy In The Blood,” the series will star Harbour as an ex-FBI agent turned security worker drawn back into spy-craft after his daugther, Rebecca (Brown), an upstart FBI agent herself, disappears on a mission. Thorne executive produces the series alongside Hipps and Patrick McDonald of Cut To, with Brown, Jake Bongiovi, and Robert Brown for PCMA, as well as Harbour and KC Wenson for Bravo Axolotl.
“We are delighted to bring this spy drama to life with an extraordinary group of talent we’ve been fortunate to collaborate with before,” said Netflix Head of Scripted Series, US and Canada, Jinnie Howe in a press statment on the series. “Jack Thorne’s ability to find the deeply human story inside a thriller is unmatched, and watching Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour reunite — this time as estranged father and daughter on opposite sides of a crisis — is something audiences are going to love. A24 is the perfect partner to bring this story to our members around the world.”
It’s no surprise that Netflix would greenlight a series order of Warner’s novel with Brown, Harbour, and Thorne involved, as “Adolescence” and “Stranger Things” “4” and “5” rank as Nos. 2, 3, and 4 respectively on Netflix’s most-watched English series list. But the eyebrows of “Stranger Things” fans may raise at the news. Rumors circulated before the release of “Stranger Things 5” of backstage issues between Brown and Harbour. The pair acknowledged reports of friction but offered no further details, and subsequently attended the Season 5 premiere together. With this new series going ahead, whatever happened, if something ever did happen, is firmly in the past.
But then another Netflix project for Brown isn’t a surprise either. The actress is star of several of high-profile projects for the streamer beyond “Stranger Things,” including the “Enola Holmes” films (a franchise Thorne has had a hand in writing; the latest of which premieres on July 1), “Damsel,” and “The Electric State.” Brown has the romance “Just Picture It” coming to Netflix soon, too, a project she also produces.
Harbour’s recent career stretches beyond Netflix, however. He currently stars in the HBO series “DTF St. Louis,” and has “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Violent Night 2,” and “John Rambo” coming to theaters soon. Further on the horizon are three more films: “Evil Genius,” “A Head Full Of Ghosts,” and “Little One.”
Meanwhile, Thorne is still riding high from the Emmy-winning series “Adolescence.” Netflix also picked up his “Lord Of The Flies” limited series adaptation, which premiered on the streamer earlier this year. Up next for the writer? Work on Sam Mendes‘ upcoming quartet “The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event.”
So when should Netflix subscribers expect this new spy series to premiere? 2028 is the safe bet, given the respective schedules of Harbour and Thorne. Stay tuned for further details.
