Yesterday, Disney kicked off their latest D23 gathering, an event where they shine a light on their future movies. The real star of the show will be later today with the first trailer for “A Wrinkle In Time,” and a new sizzle reel for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” But before all that, Disney unveiled a bunch of tidbits about their animation slate, but oddly, the biggest news came from outside the festivities.
In an interview with IGN, John Lasseter revealed that next year’s long-awaited “The Incredibles 2,” will pick up “a minute” after the original film ended.
“It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on,” he said. “It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that’s where start this movie.”
At D23 itself, director Brad Bird revealed that new heroes will be added into the mix, and showed of animation tests of upwards of 25 new characters (chill out folks, they’re not all going to be used). But at the end of the day, “The Incredibles 2” isn’t about superheroes. “ ‘Incredibles 2’ is really a family film, it’s just that the family happens to have super powers,” the director said. “They may have super speed or super strength, but they experience the same problems as any family.”
“Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” earned plenty of buzz by showing off the first clip from the movie, which featured the voices of every living Disney Princess, who were also on hand at D23: Auli‘i Cravalho (“Moana”), Kristen Bell (Anna in “Frozen”), Kelly MacDonald (Merida in “Brave”), Mandy Moore (Rapunzel in “Tangled”), Anika Noni Rose (Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog”), Irene Bedard (“Pocahontas”), Linda Larkin (Jasmine in “Aladdin”), Paige O’Hara (Belle in “Beauty and the Beast”) and Jodi Benson (Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”). Even more, the online based sequel also saw another Disney stop by and make an appearance: C-3Po. Now mix in the addition of Taraji P. Henson as the trend-setting Yesss (yep, that’s the character’s name) and ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’ promises to be quite something when it opens next year.
Not much to report on the “Toy Story 4” front except that it’s still happening, and that Lasseter will no longer be directing. The torch has been passed to Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?” short). Same goes for “Frozen 2,” which is still pushing toward its 2019 release date.
Lastly, there are two new films in the works. DisneyToons is prepping something tentatively called “Space,” which will arrive in 2019, and looks to be an extension of the “Cars“/”Planes” universe. Meanwhile, “Monsters University” helmer Dan Scanlon is working on a film is set in a world with no humans—only elves, trolls and sprites—“anything that would be on the side of a van in the ’70s.”
“In the film, we’re going to tell the story of two teenage elf brothers whose father died when they were too young to remember him. But thanks to the little magic still left in the world, the boys embark on a quest that will allow them a chance to spend one last magical day with their father,” he added. It should also be noted, the film will feature unicorns who are essentially the rodents of the planet. Interesting….
