It’s a Guy Ritchie kind of day today, as new teasers have dropped for two of the prolific director’s shows: “MobLand” Season 2 at Paramount + and “The Gentlemen” Season 2 over at Netflix. Now, according to Deadline, Prime Video wants its own crime series from Ritchie, and they’ll get it, with Rob Williams, showrunner for Apple TV‘s “Suspicion,” on board as co-writer and co-creator.
And if the setup to “Capital” sounds similar to “MobLand” and “The Gentlemen” (and therefore redundant), well, you’re right: it’s a crime drama that explores the underbelly of modern-day London. Of course, this is well-trodden territory for Ritchie, whose entire career, minus a couple of detours, has been a fixation on UK crime. But he excels at this niche, so it’s no surprise that Prime Video wants its own Ritchie series and the viewership numbers that come with one.
“Capital” will be Ritchie’s second team-up with Prime Video after “Young Sherlock,” which just got renewed for a second season. That series was a big hit for the streamer, with Season 1 ranking #1 in 95 countries with 45 million viewers in total, making it one of Prime Video’s top 10 original shows. Those numbers, coupled with the popularity of “MobLand” and “The Gentlemen,” should be a winning formula. But Williams’ involvement should also pique the interest of UK viewers. Williams wrote the acclaimed BBC drama “The Victim,” and created the Netflix limited series “The Witness,” along with his aforementioned role as showrunner on “Suspicion.” He’s a good name to pair with Ritchie, whether or not “Capital” does something original with its premise.
Also involved in “Capital”: Vice Studios and Marc Resteghini‘s Jack Tar Pictures will produce the series. Ritchie will direct and produce the drama, but other directors, not to mention who will star in the show, remain unknown.
Ritchie adds “Capital” to a list of upcoming projects that includes the “Layer Cake” sequel, “Viva La Madness.” He also has “Wife & Dog” ready to hit theaters on October 23, courtesy of Black Bear Pictures. Black Bear also handled the release of Ritchie’s severely delayed actioner “In The Grey“; that film hit theaters this Spring, and is available to rent on streaming now.
Stay tuned for who will star in “Capital,” a question that feels especially daunting since both “MobLand” and “The Gentlemen” have already cast so many British character actors. Maybe Ritchie will get some up-and-comers for this series, similar to another contemporary London crime drama, “Gangs Of London“? We’ll see.
