There is a bizarrely large number of TV shows right now about stand-up comedians. Granted, write-what-you-know is sound advice, but Showtime seems particularly invested in the lives of joke-makers, with “I’m Dying Up Here” chronicling the ’70s stand-up scene launching this summer, and Andrew Dice Clay‘s “Dice” gearing up for a second season. This fall, yet another show about the life of a stand-up arrives with “White Famous,” but it offers up an intriguing twist.
“Saturday Night Live” alum Jay Pharoah leads the series playing Floyd Mooney, who struggles to embrace mainstream attention, while staying authentic to who he is. The show is executive produced by Jamie Foxx, who also guests stars, along with a pretty killer supporting ensemble including Steve Zissis, Stephen Tobolowsky and Utkarsh Ambudkar. Here’s the official synopsis:
Saturday Night Live alum Jay Pharoah stars as Floyd Mooney, a young African-American comedian whose star is on the rise. But the path to stardom is a minefield that Floyd must navigate to maintain his credibility while attempting to become “white famous.” Executive produced by Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx and based on his experiences, this hilarious comedy series is also executive produced by Tom Kapinos, creator of Californication.
“White Famous” arrives on October 15th.
